Disability Support Worker – After-School & School Holiday Support
Eidsvold, QLD 4627 | 1:1 Support | Negotiable Hours

Are you patient, reliable and interested in gaming? We’re looking for a Disability Support Worker who can build a positive connection with a school-aged participant and provide calm, supportive companionship.

About Discover Nursing Australia
Discover Nursing Australia is a nurse-led disability support provider committed to empowering people living with disability to live with greater independence, dignity and choice.

We provide person-centred support tailored to each participant’s needs, preferences and goals.

Current Opportunity – Eidsvold, QLD 4627

We are seeking a caring, patient and engaging Disability Support Worker to support a young participant with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 3) and developmental delays.

The participant enjoys games, particularly video games, so someone who shares this interest could be a great match.

He experiences significant sensory sensitivities, limited social skills and periods of burnout. He also has a PDA profile, so a flexible approach that supports choice and reduces pressure is important.

The family is willing to negotiate days and hours with a compatible support worker. Building trust and a comfortable, consistent relationship is a priority.

Proposed Hours:
  • Two afternoons per week after school, approximately 3:00 pm–5:00 pm.
  • Additional support during school holidays.
  • The family proposes banking an additional hour of allocated support for holiday use, with approximately 40 hours anticipated for school holidays, subject to confirmation of the arrangement.
  • Days, hours and holiday scheduling are negotiable.

The Role:
Support may include:
  • Building rapport through shared interests, including video games.
  • Providing companionship and supporting enjoyable, participant-led activities.
  • Supporting social interaction at a comfortable pace.
  • Providing a calm approach that responds to sensory needs and signs of fatigue or burnout.
  • Encouraging choice and allowing time, space and breaks when needed.
  • Providing reminders to use the toilet and following established continence routines.
  • Following agreed mealtime strategies for the participant’s paediatric feeding disorder.
  • Supporting suitable activities at home and in the community.
  • Planning activities with awareness of the participant’s significant fear of dogs following a previous attack.
  • Working with the family and following relevant therapist recommendations and behaviour support strategies.
  • Maintaining accurate progress notes and support documentation.

The participant receives regular support from speech therapy, a dietitian, psychology, behaviour support, a continence nurse and occupational therapy. The worker will receive guidance on relevant routines and strategies.

About You:
We’re looking for someone who is:
  • Patient, reliable and respectful.
  • Comfortable engaging with a young person through gaming and shared interests.
  • Experienced in supporting children or young people with autism and developmental delays.
  • Familiar with PDA profiles, sensory sensitivities and approaches that reduce pressure.
  • Responsive to the participant’s communication, preferences and energy levels.
  • Comfortable following individual feeding, continence and behaviour support strategies.
  • Able to work collaboratively with the family and support team.
  • Available for consistent after-school support and negotiated school holiday hours.

A good personality match and the ability to build trust are particularly important.

What You’ll Need:
Applicants must have, or be willing to obtain where applicable:
  • Certificate III in Individual Support or an equivalent/relevant qualification.
  • Current NDIS Worker Screening Check.
  • Relevant Queensland Working with Children clearance (Blue Card), where required.
  • Current National Police Check.
  • Current First Aid Certificate and CPR certification.
  • Completion of the NDIS Worker Orientation Module – Quality, Safety and You.
  • Australian working rights.
  • Australian Business Number (ABN) or willingness to obtain one.
  • A professional, reliable and participant-focused approach.

Why Contract With Us?
  • Consistent 1:1 participant support.
  • Negotiable support arrangements.
  • Competitive contractor rates.
  • Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance provided.
  • Support from our Registered Nurse and coordination team.
  • Participant-specific guidance.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Opportunity to build a meaningful, ongoing relationship with a participant and their family.
